HA!... I had the TRS80 and it was a keyboard, cassette tape recorder and I used a black and white TV as the monitor and you pretty much had to write your own programs! This brings back memories! Below is the caption that was below the one above!
Yes, it was a real, working computer. CPU was a Z80 running at around 3 MHz. I seem to recall that the memory was 4 kb.
On the right is the cheap store-bought cassette tape recorder that served as file storage. Keyboard keys were lettered with Letra-set, color-coded with nail polish and sealed with clear acrylic. The case was varnished marine ply, and an old Black & White TV was used as the display unit. I actually wrote a payroll program (in a mixture of Basic and Z80 Assembler languages) on this computer, that was used in a real-world business. April 13 Out to Lunch Well we went over to my Son and daughter-n-laws to eat lunch and It was really nice!

Mr. Bitlockers Hoover Residents Start to Clean-Up after Friday's Severe WeatherLess than 24 hours after a fierce storm system swept through Central Alabama, toppling trees and knocking out power to thousands, it seems for many, the clean up has only just begun. In Hoover, one of the areas hit especially hard by damaging hail and powerful winds, residents spent Saturday sawing through downed trees, collecting fallen branches and other debris, and fastening tarps to their punctured rooftops. Travis Wolfe just had a new roof placed on his home near Aldridge Gardens last year. He'll have to do it all over again now that an 80-ft. pine tree snapped in half, piercing his roof and living room ceiling with a 10-ft-long limb. "At least (the tree removal company) did come and remove the tree," Wolfe said. "I was just worried the tree was going to cave in the house." Besides a gaping hole in the roof and ceiling, the impact of the tree's fall also caused stress fractures in other areas of the home. At the Cedar Brook apartments not far away, where a roof collapsed in the stormy weather, a metal fence serves as a barricade around the damaged building; the twenty people who once called it home remain displaced. "(I'm) devastated, just devastated," said Jacquelyn Ferriera, who lived in the apartment adjacent to the collapsed roof. "I've never had anything like this happen to me before." Ferriera says the American Red Cross is providing her and her family with shelter for the time being. Off Rocky Ridge Rd., Scott Jackson is thankful to be alive after a pine tree toppled onto a wire, and nearly on top of him, striking his home instead. "I looked up right as it hit. I saw branches, that's about the time it hit the wire and the wire just snapped and shot out sparks all over me," Jackson said. While there's no doubt the clean-up will take a lot of time, effort and money, many remain surpisingly upbeat about the whole ordeal. "I'm happy today," said Wolfe. "It's a nice day out. It could have been worse. The house is still standing."
ON THIS DATE IN 1857: Parts of Alabama received a surprise 4 inch dusting of snow in a late season snow and frost in the year that saw April snow in every state in the United States. FREEZE WATCH / April SnowBy the way it was around 80 degrees yesterday!
***FREEZE WATCH FOR SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING AND AGAIN FOR MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING***
Record setting cold and the chance for a late freeze headline our weather forecast on this mid-April Sunday morning. Agricultural interests will want to prepare to protect tender vegetation tonight and tomorrow. UNSEASONABLE COLD: An extremely deep upper level trough is transporting cold air from the Arctic regions south all the way to the Gulf Coast. This airmass is going to set quite a few records for this time of year. We will be flirting with record lows across Alabama tonight and Monday night. Today will be not be a good day for a picnic. A disturbance in the upper flow will bring increasing clouds with a chance of a little light rain, or even a few snow flurries this afternoon through Monday morning. Dont plan any picnics for Monday either. Highs today and Monday will struggle to make it very far into the 50s. In fact, some locations may not get out of the 40s. FREEZE WATCH: Tonight, temperatures will fall well into the 30s. Some of the normally colder locations could drop into the upper 20s, but a persistent northwest wind and some cloudiness will keep a serious freeze from occurring. Still, it is close enough of a call that our grower friends need to go ahead and be prepared to take precautions overnight. Monday night will colder for sure. High pressure will be settling in Monday night and our winds should go calm. With clear skies, we will have perfect conditions for radiational cooling to occur. We are not a one number area, and lows could drop as low as 26 in the normally colder locations and range as high as 33 in other spots. April 12 A little Weather Humor! In the case of tornadoes sweeping through Alabama,we are asking all Alabamians to take shelter at Jordan-Hare Stadium located in Auburn, AL.We are fairly certain a touchdown will not occur there.
Author Unknown Joke for today!A graduate from Auburn, a graduate from Alabama and a pig were in the hospital waiting room, each awaiting the birth of his first child. Suddenly, the lights went out. Fortunately, power was restored shortly thereafter and the head nurse made her way to the waiting room. "I've got good news and bad news, gentlemen and pig," she announced. "Despite the electrical outage, two healthy boys and one healthy piglet have been delivered". However, since the lights went out at a most inopportune time, we aren't sure which firstborn belongs to whom. The only way we know to resolve the problem is to draw straws and have the winner choose first." The three proud papas agreed, and the Alabama grad won the drawing. He was escorted into the delivery room and looked at the three newborns for a painstakingly long time. Finally, with head bowed, he scooped up the piglet and headed for the door. "Sir, are you quite certain that you've made the right choice?" the nurse asked. "No, I'm not," replied the Crimson Tide grad. "But I just couldn't run the risk of ending up with the Auburn kid."
ROLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!! Dish Network Takes TiVo Battle to Supreme CourtDish Network Takes TiVo Battle to Supreme Court
The satcaster claims patent defeat will not jeopardize current users. By Swanni Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2008) -- Dish Network said late yesterday that it will appeal a DVR patent ruling favoring TiVo to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A federal appeals court yesterday rejected Dish's request to reconsider a ruling that supported TiVo in its patent suit against the satcaster. TiVo sued the satcaster in 2004, saying it violated its 'Time Warp' patent for a DVR software feature which is used for both SD and HDTV programming. The Time Warp feature allows "the user to store selected television broadcast programs while the user is simultaneously watching or reviewing another program," according to TiVo's patent which was filed for almost 10 years ago. A Texas jury decided in favor of TiVo in April 2006, awarding the company $73.9 million in damages. The appeals court upheld that verdict in January and Dish last month asked the appeals court to reconsider. If the ruling is upheld, Dish may owe TiVo as much as $100 million in damages, including interest. In addition, the satcaster could be forced to disable its four million DVRs, although it claims that a software upgrade has removed the feature found in violation. In its statement yesterday saying it will appeal to the Supreme Court, Dish reiterated that the appeals court ruling would not impact its current DVR users For TiVo, a favorable outcome could give the company leverage in negotiating future DVR licensing deals with cable and satellite operators. The DVR company yesterday said it was "extremely pleased" with the appeals court ruling. Dish Network's HD Satellite: Total FailureDish Network's HD Satellite: Total Failure
SES Americom says it can't be saved. By Swanni Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2008) -- Dish Network's plans to expand its High-Definition lineup were stymied yesterday when its new satellite was declared a total failure. Dish had planned to leave space on the AMC-14 satellite which was launched last month by SES Americom. The satellite was the first of three that Dish hoped to use this year to expand its HD programming. But the AMC-14 satellite failed to reach its proper orbit shortly after launch and SES yesterday officially declared that it can't be saved. Dish did not comment on the news, but has said recently that it's still "on track" to increase its national HD lineup from 76 to 100 channels by year's end and significantly increase its local HD offering. The satcaster noted that it has two more satellite launches this year. However, DIRECTV now has 95 national HD channels and yesterday's setback is likely to impact Dish's plan to stay competitive with its satellite rival. In a statement, SES yesterday said efforts to reposition the satellite created "unacceptable risks and would result in a severely shortened life of the satellite. Therefore, we have no choice but to claim a total loss of the satellite with our insurers." Microsoft’s Bill Gates repents, offers to make amends
In an unprecedented display of openness and humility, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced at a press conference on Friday that, “Microsoft’s days of corporate greed, arrogance and bullying are over. From now on, I will personally guarantee that every user of our products is completely satisfied. I’m putting my money where my mouth is.” Set to retire in July 2008 from the daily chores of running Microsoft, Gates vowed to devote himself full-time to, “correcting the bad behavior of the past and compensating unsatisfied computer users who have lost time, sleep, health and money struggling with our products.” Gates said that he is directing his top management executives to transform Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage program into one that will allow unsatisfied Microsoft customers to recoup losses incurred as a result of software flaws and failures. For years, Microsoft’s Windows operating system, Internet Explorer website browser and Office productivity programs have been sources of frustration to millions of computer users. Riddled with programming flaws, security holes and stability problems, Microsoft software has caused a loss of time and productivity to almost every person that has used their products. Worldwide monetary losses associated with Microsoft software problems since the release of its Windows 95 operating system are estimated to be between $70-100 trillion. Through the newly revamped Windows Genuine Advantage program, unsatisfied users of Microsoft products may submit monetary claims for damages directly to the office of Bill Gates. “I’m appointing former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as my personal Secretary of Compensation. Steve’s job will be to ensure that every person that has suffered loss as a result of our software is amply compensated,” Gates said. The claims process is designed to be relatively painless, in contrast to the hoops that one must jump through just to install, activate and “validate” current Microsoft products. Applicants may download an official compensation form at www.microsoft.com/compensation. They will need to describe what Microsoft product was being used at the time of the alleged loss, a brief but detailed description of how the software product failed, and an estimate of how much time and productivity was lost as a result of the product failure. Applicants will also provide a dollar-per-hour amount that they think would be fair compensation. The application must then be notarized and sent certified mail. All but the most ridiculous claims, such as using your computer in the shower, will be honored, Gates said. Reaction to Gate’s announcement was swift, and mostly positive. “It’s about time,” said Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs. “We’ve been trying to be the best for years. I’m glad to see that Bill (Gates) has had a change of heart, and that Microsoft will start cleaning up its act.” “Halleluiah!” exclaimed one Seattle housewife. “I lost all of my digital family photos last week when Windows crashed, and the stress almost sent me to the hospital. Maybe I can get something back for my loss.”Dave Moore, computer columnist for Norman, Oklahoma’s daily newspaper The Transcript was skeptical. “I don’t believe it, not a single word. Of course, it’s not every week that my article is published on April 1. Happy April Fools Day.”
